Partnering with Louis Vuitton for the 2023 Chinese New Year watchface collection

For the fourth year in a row, we had the pleasure of collaborating with Louis Vuitton to create a stunning collection of 12 watchface animations for their 2023 Chinese New Year collection. After using the animal designs we created in 2020 for three years, the client wanted to explore a new style. They were inspired by the animal-shaped Chinese lanterns used in festivals, and challenged us to create 12 new animal designs that would reflect this style.

Designing and Animating the Animals

Our artist designed 12 unique and original animal characters in Photoshop, ensuring a coherent style between all of them.
We then created 3D models with handcrafted textures using Adobe Substance Painter, and rigged and animated the models in Maya, using hand-drawn storyboards as a reference.

Time display and LED integrations

We creatively displayed the time in each animation by placing it in between the animal and the background to give a sense of depth.
We exported all the animations in multiple layers, giving the developers the ability to integrate the dynamic time in-between the animal and the background.

In addition, we created the animations to drive the custom LED animations around the watch display, ensuring each animal's movements and colors were perfectly matched.
